Many high-profile and popular music artists today started out as Independent Music artists. If they could find success, you can too.
This article will take you through a series of steps to help you become a successful independent music artist.
Build your brand
Going indie means you don’t have a big record label to back you. Artists who have this get their branding and music PR curated carefully for them regardless of cost. To build your brand yourself, you must become intentional about developing a unique identity. Things to work on include your visual aesthetics, pictures, social media presence, logo, outfits, and cohesion of all these pieces.
If you can, pay professional stylists, designers, and social media managers to assist you.
Maintain a standard of quality music
A musician needs exposure and fans, but nothing pushes your brand and attracts success better than quality music. If your music is good, it will literally carry you to the doors of stardom. Do what it takes to produce high-quality music. Write often. Practice often. Collaborate more. Explore different genres to find your unique voice.
Start connecting with fans early
Many die-hard fans are made from the early days of an artist. Start building your fanbase and engaging with this audience via social media, music streaming platforms, and even physical events.
You can vlog about your indie music career on YouTube as an additional strategy.
Gigs
Live shows, performances, open mics, tours, and more are ways to get in front of a live audience and grow your career. Be open to as many of these opportunities as you can find. But beyond performing and boosting your confidence as an independent artist, use these events to network with promoters, brands, and other industry professionals.
Collaboration
There are other independent artists like you, some ahead. Take advantage of any opportunities to meet them and collaborate. Get into features and remixes with these artists and build relationships that could lead to recommendations for opportunities.
Work on music distribution
Thanks to how far the music industry has evolved, it is easier to distribute your music now than in the past. Major streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, and Tidal are good places to start.
Music promotion
A lot of your success as an artist rides on music promotion. Record labels provide non-independent musicians with big budgets for this. But as an indie music artist, you need to develop a working strategy for your music promotion. Before dropping new songs or albums, be sure to build buzz for it. Send your music to blogs, radio stations, and playlist curators to secure as much exposure as possible. Volunteer to be on certain stages. And if possible, get insights from an experienced music promoter.
Earning from your music
Earnings in your Independent Music career will come from streaming royalties, merchandise sales, licensing deals, and live performances. You have to be your own professional on these matters, so research thoroughly and do the math to keep track.
